Antioxidant Berry Smoothie

Coffee was found to be by far the greatest source of antioxidants in the typical American diet. Don't get me wrong I love my morning coffee but as complex human beings we need a greater source of antioxidants than just coffee.

Antioxidants help to sequester free radicals in the body that can damage DNA which has the potential to cause heart disease and cancers.

Berries are a wonderful source of antioxidants and are also full of vitamins, minerals. The fiber found naturally in berries will also help to slow the release of sugar into the blood stream.

This smoothie is definitely a go to and a great smoothie for kids of all ages. Its super easy to make and can even be frozen into popsicles for children to have as a healthy treat on hot summer days!

Recipe

One whole Grapefruit skin removed

1/4 cup blue berry

1/2 cup strawberry

1/4 cup raspberry

3/4 cup water or ice

1 tbsp of hemp seed ground up with a mortar and pestle before added

Blend to a smooth consistency and enjoy!

---

To easily add the grapefruit merely slice it in half and then cut around the edge separating the skin from the edible vesicles. I then spoon out the whole vesicles including the in-between membranes into the blender leaving behind the hard skin that can be composted.

Just remember there are medications that interact with grapefruit - notably HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (lipitor). Check with your health care provider that you can consume grapefruits free from interactions with medication.
